Many people enter into Couples Therapy with anxiety because they don’t know what to expect. Some even postpone making an appointment because the fear of the unknown makes them put it off until things get really difficult. It’s better not to wait. Marriage counseling can benefit you quickly if you don’t allow resentment to build. The most important thing that I can tell you is that in couples therapy, I work for you. I’m Lisa Ryan LPC. I have the training and the skills, licensed by the state of Connecticut, to move you forward quickly.
Couples Therapy Basic Communication Skills
I use a one-page document called Ground Rules, which has been fine-tuned for over 15 years of marriage counseling experience. It guides you on how to be heard and how to listen, in one session or less. You can’t really share a complete thought until you apply the basic points of good communication that you will learn in couples therapy. Other communication tips include how to apologize well and how to offer a great compliment. In couples therapy, you will learn to differentiate an argument from a difference of opinion. You will see how defensiveness can get in the way of a great conversation. Whether you live in Westport CT or San Diego CA, strong communication tools will keep your relationship strong.
Couples Therapy Relationship Assessments
I have designed a series of quick assessments that will help you and your partner learn how which common, and not so common, flash points are present in your relationship. We will talk about money and how it is managed, and your sex life and whether you both feel mutually satisfied. Assessments also help me to determine whether there is a power differential, who is feeling criticized, and how a person might not being feeling fully appreciated. And that’s just the start.
Couples Therapy Role Reversals
The best way to really feel what your partner feels is through reversing roles. I will run each of you through a series of questions that will get you to enthusiastically defend the opinions of your spouse. It’s sometimes fun, and always profoundly effective. Happily married couples who want to stay tuned up come see me every three months and really enjoy the exercises. It keeps them sharp.
