Counseling in CT – Getting the Right Help
It sure isn’t easy trying to find counseling in CT that will be the perfect fit for you. Should you find a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), a Social Worker (LMSW), a Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT)? Or should you be calling a psychologist or psychiatrist? What are the differences?
The most important element of getting good counseling in CT, for you, is finding a great fit. Unless you are looking for something specialized, fit is most important. You and perhaps members of your family have to trust your counselor, feel total acceptance from him or her, and you should expect to get results. After all, if all you needed to do was just talk, you’d be calling your best friend. You want counseling in CT because you want to fix something or feel better.
Which Therapists Offer What?
Many of the different kinds of therapists listed above offer similar services. If you need someone who specializes in adolescents, then google people in your area or ask your doctor or friends for referrals. If your child needs testing or requires a possible diagnosis, a child psychologist would be the best place to begin. Only a psychiatrist, and some psychiatric nurses, are licensed to prescribe medication. Do your research.
Some counselors specialize in depression. Others in anxiety. There are a multitude of psychotherapists who can help you to understand your present thoughts, feelings and behaviors by unwrapping your past. There are therapists who are solution-focused as I am. There are therapists who specialize in bipolar disorder, personality disorders, or PTSD. Google what you think you need and start making calls.
Do What Feels Right
Like anything you need done, do some research and place a few calls. If someone does not answer your call in a timely fashion, that may be a clue for you. If you felt a good connection on the phone, pay attention to that one especially. Don’t ever be afraid to ask a therapist how they treat clients; a professional will not be the least beat offended.
I specialize in relationship counseling in CT, though I do phone and internet counseling when I feel it is appropriate and can be effective. I am best known for couples therapy, infidelity counseling, and helping individuals build strength and self-confidence. I would not be your first call for addiction, for example, but I may be able to offer you a few referrals.
In Network Or Out Of Network
Lastly, therapy is an investment of time and money. You may get lucky and find that your good-fit counselor is also on the panel of your insurance company. There are great points and less great points to consider when going in network. Most counselors in CT, at least in Fairfield County, are out of network. That said, many clients come to me with financial challenges. Adding one more expense could make matters harder for you, so be sure to keep that in mind as well.
I hope you find a perfect fit very soon and that you gain the tools you need to navigate your future effectively and confidently.
